Tomorrow is Kimono Day at Yu-Ai Kai Akiyama Wellness Center from 1-5 p.m. on 110 Jackson Street.

Tickets are $30 for general admission, $20 for SV-JACL and Yu-AI Kai Senior Club members, $15 for students, and $10 for children under 12.

John Marshall who is a craftsman will be presenting a historical and cultural perspective kimonos have had, as well as a demonstration on how to dress in kimono.  In addition there will be a fashion show of contemporary and traditional Japanese clothing which will be for sale.  Crafts and activities will be available for children.

The Nikkei Matsuri was this past Sunday in San Jose’s Japantown as well as Yu-Ai Kai’s Nihonmachi Run.  For more information about the festival and where it was located click this link

The Festival started in 1976 with America’s Bicentennial celebration when San Jose encouraged many ethnic communities to share their culture through festivals.  The Japanese American community here decided to share their culture through food and art which developed into a successful festival and is celebrating it’s 34th year.

After seeing the disaster in Japan and the aftermath, the Japanese Student Association has come together and brainstormed fundraising ideas.  Besides selling wristbands and candy we are also planning an auction/fundraising dinner for Japan.  So far in addition to the success of the wristbands and candy we have made great progress in moving forward with the dinner. I know I have not blogged in a while and gave up on trying to update everyday about the Japan disaster.  However, I have been busy taking action for Japan.  Good news as you can see from my twitter account is we have been busy collecting donations on SJSU’s campus.  So far we have raised close to a $1,000 in two weeks.  Thank you  to all of your support for Japan.  We are selling wristbands at $2 for Japan.  Please let me know if you would like to purchase a wristband we are almost sold out so hurry to receive your wristband today!
